Obituary
"It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the peaceful passing of a special man, David Dale Holmes. David is survived by his son Chris Holmes, and two grandchildren who reside in London, England. David touched the hearts, minds, and lives of many people around the world which he traveled 2 and half times over.
In high school David was a jazz musician. He went to Mc Master University and studied philosophy for 4 years. David had a successful career where he first taught at Georgetown University. He later became a professor for the University of Maryland’s campus in Munich, Germany for 25 years. He taught philosophy, English literature, and wide range of other subjects encompassing the entire curriculum.
David lived at the foot of the Alps. He enjoyed skiing and found harmony in nature and the universe. He sailed his yacht across the Mediterranean for approximately 8 years while living in the south of France on the border with Italy.
David discovered Buddhism, love and kindness in Sri Lanka. He was mentored by Nyanaponika Thera and Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi. David moved to Thailand and taught at Chulalongkorn University for 7 years. He was an editor for the Buddhist Publication Society and shared Bhikku Bodhi’s translations.
He returned to Canada to retire and resided at Wat Khmer Kampuchea Krom Buddhist Temple. He shared Buddhist teachings virtually online reaching an international audience. He remained active in the Theravada Buddhist community and spent time as an ordained novice Buddhist monk. He assisted the head monk at the temple, Venerable Thach Truong Dhammo, and shared his wisdom with anyone that was interested in learning.
May the blessings of the Buddha be upon him and may he achieve the supreme bliss of Nibbana. May he be free from the cycle of samsara. May he be at peace knowing that he had a positive impact on the world and transformed the lives of others. May he know that he is loved, will be remembered, and will remain in the hearts and minds of many. As per the Buddha's teachings, may we be reminded that life is impermanent and to spend our time fostering meaningful connections, and by doing good, wholesome, and skillful actions."
